I had a few players with email addresses that changed from year to year, they didn't get the invitation this year.  Does it make sense to allow the manager to update the player's email address?  I would envision doing this before sending out the next year's invitations.

If a player creates a new account under a new email address, is there a way to merge the accounts?

You can update their email now if you want, via the Edit Player Profile page.

Another thing to consider, though fairly rare, is that if anyone of your past players ever marks an email from the site as 'spam', they won't be sent any kind of email from the site.  Email servers have become very picky (rightly so), and my provider, ElasticEmail, will prevent any email from being sent to someone who marked an email from officepoolstop.com as 'spam' or 'complaint'. So I always send my last batch of reminders (probably this Saturday) via gmail just to be on the safeside.

There isn't a way to merge accounts.  The best thing to do is use their old account and update its email address. They can also do this themselves via the Edit Profile page.
